Johnson Lake

About
Johnson Lake is a small lake near Banff townsite with a sandy, pebbly beach and picnic area. It is one of the few lakes in Banff National Park that is not glacier-fed, which makes it one of the warmer lakes in the Rockies, though the water is still cold. Parks Canada lists it in the Water Recreation Zone, where swimming, beach toys, snorkelling and paddling are allowed. Fishing is not allowed at Johnson Lake. A loop trail of about 2.9 km circles the lake.
Getting there
From the Trans-Canada Highway take the Banff Avenue exit onto Lake Minnewanka Road, keep right at the Lake Minnewanka / Johnson Lake split, and continue about 3.7 km to the Johnson Lake road. Parking fills on warm weekends: park only in designated lots or take Roam transit.
Access & rules
In Banff National Park: a park pass is required. Swimming is unsupervised. Before launching any watercraft or inflatable you need a free self-certification permit (Clean, Drain, Dry). Motorized boats are prohibited. Dogs must be on leash; no drones.

Swim Feel (experimental)
Swim Feel combines the latest measured water temperature (shown above, never changed) with forecast air temperature, wind, cloud and an estimated sun strength. It is an uncalibrated comfort guide, not a safety rating, and it is separate from water-quality advisories. No score is shown without a valid measured water reading less than 48 hours old. Weather: MET Norway Locationforecast, CC BY 4.0. Model lake-swim-feel-0.1.0.
Water quality & advisories
A temperature is not a safety rating. Check current swimming advisories before you go. Cold water can cause cold-water shock.
No AHS blue-green algae advisory for this lake was listed when we checked on 2026-10-28. That does not mean the water is safe.
